BANF’s initial grantmaking was intended to temporarily stabilize under-resourced BIPOC arts groups during the pandemic. As a response to historic and current inequitable systems, this grantmaking also sought to develop a picture of the existing BIPOC arts ecosystem—where it is growing, thriving, and where transformative changes are already being sparked.
BANF’s grantmaking processes and distribution were experiments in catalyzing these sparks to shift the field’s conditions towards equity.
